History talk: The demise and resurrection of the Albert Railway Bridge at Oxley Point

Step back in time and discover the fascinating history of the Albert Railway Bridge at Oxley Point.

Led by Andrew Darbyshire from the Brisbane History Group Research Library, this free talk will reveal how the devastating floods of the 1890s wreaked havoc on the bridge, ultimately consigning it to the bottom of the Brisbane River.

This all happened right under the nose of Railway Chief Engineer HC Stanley whose residence Tignabruaich (which later became the headquarters of the Allied Translator and Interrogation Section during WWII), overlooked what was then the only railway crossing point of the Brisbane River.

It took two years to complete the rebuilding of the bridge.

The talk will last around an hour.
